Top tips for keeping your children’s teeth healthy this Halloween
It’s October, and that means one thing - the spooky season is just around the corner! Halloween is a time when our kids love dressing up and go from door to door in search of as much candy as their little hands can carry. But what does the excess sugar at this time of the year mean for your children’s teeth? Here are some tips for keeping their pearly whites healthy before, during, and after Halloween this year.
Keep on top of their sugar intake
While Halloween has always been about our kids accumulating as much candy as possible, it’s important to monitor how much of it your kids actually eat! Although a sugar rush on October 31st is inevitable, be sure to put a plan in place for your child’s consumption of their trick-or-treat bounty. Whether you limit them to a treat after school each day throughout the start of November or put some away for later in the year, it’s important not to let your kids gorge on too much candy - their teeth won’t thank you for doing so.
Consider sugar-free sweets
Although you can’t control what other parents hand out to your kids on Halloween, you can control the sweets that you keep in the house. Sugar-free sweets are becoming more popular (and tastier!), meaning that you don’t have to go down the traditional route. Holland and Barrett stocks a decent selection of sugar-free sweets, so check out their range before stocking up on Halloween candy this year for a teeth-friendly alternative for your kids.
Check-in on their oral hygiene
There’s never a bad time to check in on your kids’ oral hygiene, and Halloween is no exception. Make sure your children are brushing their teeth twice a day and ask them how their teeth and gums are feeling. If you’re worried about your kids’ teeth brushing habits, try and educate them about the importance of keeping their teeth clean and why it matters as they get older. Kids are receptive to such lessons, and when they realise how important brushing their teeth is, they’re much more likely to cooperate.
Schedule a Halloween visit to the hygienist
Following on from the last point, you could always schedule an appointment with a dental hygienist this Halloween to check on the health of your child’s mouth, gums, and teeth. Our hygienists are super friendly and knowledgeable and will help you identify any potential issues with your child’s teeth. A visit to the hygienist can be less intimidating for your kids than a trip to the dentist, so it’s a good way to have your kids’ teeth checked without causing them unnecessary stress, which is ideal at this time of the year.
Arrange your post-Halloween trip to the dentist
At Pure Smiles, we understand that kids love to indulge in sugary treats at this time of the year, and it’s certainly nothing new! But to counteract this excess of sugar, it’s a good idea to schedule a post-Halloween checkup for you and your kids to ensure their sugar consumption doesn’t do any lasting damage to their teeth. You can call us today on 0203 613 3324 to schedule an appointment, or you can book online if you prefer.
