Invisalign – I’m restoring my smile in secret
About 8 years ago I took the big step of having fixed braces – you may know them as train tracks - to give me the smile and confidence I had always wanted. For 18 long months I braved the mouth ulcers, difficulties with cleaning my teeth and having to avoid a whole host of foods that I love to eat, to finally reveal a set of beautifully straight teeth for the first time in my life.
I was so happy and so relieved to have the braces taken off. You would imagine that I would then do everything in my power to maintain my dream smile but no, I did exactly the same thing that people who have had braces do, I did not wear the retainers prescribed by their dentist or orthodontist. In my case I ignored my brother Shiraz’s instruction and I never got my wire retainers fitted.
So some 8 years later my teeth are largely back to their original crooked selves. I don’t think I could go through the inconvenience and obvious presence of train tracks again, which is why it’s so brilliant that Invisalign clear braces are the perfect solution. My glorious lost smile is within reach once more, far more conveniently and flexibly than ever before.
Last Wednesday Shiraz kindly provided me with my Invisalign aligners. If you are not familiar with Invisalign and have always been desirous of a smile that radiates confidence, you might be really interested in this removable, almost invisible teeth-straightening system. It is a digitally-planned alignment system that uses a series of clear plastic aligners to straighten your teeth, a bit like gum shields but much more comfortable. They are removable so it’s easy to keep your teeth clean and because they are clear, most people don’t notice them at all.
My first seven days of Invisalign have been so easy. My speech was marginally affected but within a few days I naturally adjusted. I have had no discomfort at all apart from some slight sensitivity.
Most of my patients have not noticed I am wearing Invisalign aligners until I point them out. Wearing them has hampered my ability to snack so I am sure an added bonus is going to be the shedding of a few unwanted pounds.
I will keep you posted on my progress and share some photos of my teeth throughout the process. After I have seen Ciara or Suraj for a good thorough polishing and hygiene session!
