Brushing Your Teeth: The Definitive Guide

Knowing how to brush your teeth properly is important to keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Many of us brush our teeth incorrectly and fail to give them the proper care they need. Follow this quick guide to ensure you’re brushing your teeth the right way.

Use the right toothbrush

It’s very important that you have the right toothbrush. The best toothbrush for you will be dependent on your specific needs. Those who have problems with manual dexterity would be better suited to an electronic toothbrush. In most cases, we recommend a soft-bristled toothbrush. Also, opt for a toothbrush will a smaller head to reach the back of your teeth more easily.

Type of toothpaste

There are so many different kinds of toothpaste to choose from and some are better than others. You need a toothpaste with the right concentration of floricide. Your dentist will be able to tell you the toothpaste you should use. Also, keep in mind that children under the age of three should only use a smear or a blob of toothpaste.

The proper technique

The best way to brush your teeth is by tilting the toothbrush to a 45-degree angle, apply gentle pressure and brush using short, back and forth strokes. It’s important that you clean the outer and inner surfaces of the teeth, to completely remove all bacteria. You should never travel across the gums, as this can cause gum recession. If you can’t brush your teeth for whatever reason, then remember to floss.

Take your time

In addition to brushing your teeth at least twice a day, you should spend at least two minutes cleaning your teeth. This gives you enough times to be able to effectively clean your mouth. If you feel you’re not brushing for long enough, consider using a stopwatch or get a toothbrush with an automatic timer.

Don’t forget your tongue

Many people often overlook brushing their tongue, but it’s important for your oral hygiene. A nasty coating of bacteria and food particles can live on your tongue, and this is what contributes to bad breath. Cleaning your tongue is essential to proper oral care.
