3 genius ways to upcycle your old toothpaste tubes!
Toothpaste tubes have a short life- once you’ve managed to squeeze the last pea-size bit of toothpaste out, they’re heading straight for the bin. Most people use around six toothpaste tubes every year which makes for a lot of wasted material. Well, not anymore: these easy-to-make projects upcycle your empty tubes so that they don’t go unused!
The pencil holder
What you’ll need:
- An empty tube of toothpaste
- Scissors
- Super glue
- Scrap fabric
- Ribbon
- Pen
How to make it:
- Line a pen up against your empty toothpaste tube and draw a line ¾ of the height of the pen on the tube. Cut the tube across this line on the end with the cap on it.
- Wrap your scrap fabric around the end of the tube that’s been cut, making sure that the fabric overlaps the top of the tube by around an inch. Cut the fabric to this size and then super glue around the tube.
- Take your ribbon and wrap it around near the top of the fabric. (You’re looking to wrap the ribbon around the fabric loosely so that you can still reach into the tube). Super glue to ribbon onto the fabric.
- Put the pens inside and tie the ribbon around them to complete your new pen holder for work or home!
A wire tidier
What you’ll need:
- An empty toothpaste tube
- A drill
How to make it:
- Remove the cap of the toothpaste tube. Measure the widest point of the top of the tube (where the cap fastens onto) and match your drill piece to this circumference.
- Drill a hole through the middle of the toothpaste tube. Make sure you keep your fingers away from the drill and use a vice if you have one.
- Wrap the tube around your wires and slip the top of the tube through the hole. Use the cap to fasten complete the project and make cluttered wires a thing of the past!
A toothpaste and toothbrush holder
What you’ll need:
- Empty tubes of toothpaste
- Scissors
- Glue
- Ribbon
- Patience
How to make it:
- You’ll need patience to collect all of your empty toothpaste tubes together to make this toothpaste and toothbrush holder. (Once you have enough that they are 5 inches in length when they are laid side by side, you’re ready to go).
- Remove the top of the with the cap on and the bottom with the seal. Cut vertically down the inside of the tube so that it is flat. Repeat for all tubes.
- Lay one flat tube lengthways next to another. Take your ribbon and run it along the crease between the two pieces so that it overlaps on both sides. Cut ribbon to this length and super glue the tubes together. Repeat for all tubes until they are superglued together in one big flat piece. Take the two ends of the flat piece and repeat the same process so that you have a cylinder shape.
- Place the cylinder upright on the sink, and put your toothpaste tube and toothbrushes in!
