Tot’s teeth tips: how to keep them brushing!

Getting your children to brush their teeth is never an easy task. Between the refusal and the tantrums, sometimes it feels like it’s a lot easier to just give up, but don’t! Your tot’s teeth are very important to their future dental health, helping to guide their permanent teeth into position. To help you, we’ve come up with some tips to keep your tot brushing!

Make it a game

Kids love games, and you should too. Playing games is one of the best ways for your kids to learn when they’re young, plus they’re fun! We recommend making a game so they can learn to brush their teeth. You could pretend there’s a tiny tooth creature hopping around from tooth to tooth that they have to catch with their brush, or that there’s evil sugar pixies they have to brush off! As long as you’ve got the imagination and the energy, this is a great way to get your tot brushing.

Play copycat

Little ones love to copy, so use it to your advantage! There’s a few ways to use this technique: you can try opting for a ‘Mummy/Daddy brushes, then you brush’ approach where you brush your own teeth and they copy you, or (if you’re brave) you can let them brush your teeth, then you can take your turn brushing theirs. If you make your little one aware that you brush your teeth, they’re far more likely to follow.

Brush their toys’ teeth

If you get your little one giggling, they’ll be much more receptive to brushing their teeth. You can make this happen by taking a collection of their favourite toys and ‘brushing their teeth’. Getting a stuffed animal or doll and brushing their teeth, is a fun way of showing them that brushing teeth is important. You can take this even further by telling the toy the reasons why it’s important and hoping that your little one is listening too!

Go supply shopping

If you take your tot to the shop to pick up their dental supplies, you’re starting off on the right foot. Involving them with their dental health from the start by having them pick out their own toothbrush and toothpaste, will make all the difference when it comes to them wanting to brush their teeth.

Make a song

Little ones learn lots when they’re young through songs and rhymes. Try making a teeth tune! It doesn’t have to be a masterpiece, just enough to make their dental routine a bit more fun and light-hearted. Something like, “the toothbrush in the mouth goes scrub-a-dub-dub, scrub-a-dub-dub, scrub-a-dub-dub!” will be more than enough to make them more interested in brushing their teeth.

We know that getting your tot to brush their teeth can be a struggle, but we hope that our tips will help to make things a little bit easier! Whatever tooth tactic you opt for, the ultimate goal is to make things fun – the more fun they have brushing their teeth, the more likely they will be to do it, simple as that! If you get your child on the right path with their teeth straight away, they’ll learn to brush their own teeth, in no time!
